Seven date night ideas for staying in

Some evenings call for a plan that begins after you’ve put on comfortable clothes. Staying in can feel different from the usual routine with one small decision made together.

1. Let dinner choose the film

Pick a meal first, then choose a film that fits the mood. It could be noodles and a comedy, a picnic on the living-room floor, or breakfast food at dinner time. Agree on the film before you start cooking so the food doesn’t go cold while you browse.

2. Play five songs each

Take turns choosing songs and saying why you picked them. Include one you loved years ago, one that reminds you of the other person, and one they might not know. You don’t need to agree on the best song. The conversation is part of the evening.

3. Have a tiny tasting

Choose three versions of something you already enjoy, such as chocolate, tea or a favorite snack. Put them on small plates and compare them without looking at the packaging. Keep it simple and account for any allergies or dietary needs.

4. Make something with what you have

Sketch each other, fold paper, put together a photo page or try a craft kit that’s been sitting unopened. Set a short amount of time and leave room for imperfect results. The evening doesn’t need to produce something worth displaying.

5. Revisit a trip without booking another one

Open a few photos from a day you enjoyed and let each person choose a favorite. Write down the small details that aren’t in the pictures: the song in the car, the unexpected rain, or the place you found by accident.

6. Pick a game with an easy stopping point

A short card game or a familiar board game works well when you’re tired. Decide whether you want a friendly competition or something cooperative before you begin. Skip a complicated new rulebook if that already sounds like work.

7. Plan one small thing for next week

Open your saved ideas and each choose one that fits the time and money you want to spend. Check the practical details, then put one plan on the calendar. Leave the bigger decisions alone for the evening.

You can keep these ideas in a shared bucket list and choose by energy level. If the best plan turns out to be takeaway and an early night, that is a perfectly good result too.

Keep a little inspiration going.
